What Is Personal Care?

Personal care means practical help with the private, everyday tasks most of us do without thinking. Washing, dressing, using the toilet, moving safely around the house. It is the kind of support that becomes necessary after a fall, an illness or simply as the years go on.

For most families this is the hardest conversation to have. Nobody wants to tell their mum she needs help in the shower, and no parent wants to ask. Our job is to make that as ordinary and undramatic as possible. A good carer does not make a fuss. They arrive on time, they do what is needed at the pace of the person in front of them, and they leave the house better than they found it.

How Murray Healthcare Helps

Washing and bathing

Support with showering, bathing or a wash at the basin, including hair washing, shaving and skin care, always at a comfortable temperature and pace.

Dressing and undressing

Help choosing clothes, getting dressed in the morning and ready for bed at night, including support with fastenings, shoes and compression stockings where these are part of the care plan.

Toileting and continence

Discreet support with using the toilet, changing continence products and keeping skin clean and comfortable, handled without embarrassment or comment.

Getting up and settling down

Help getting in and out of bed, moving safely around the home, using mobility aids and settling comfortably at night.

Support with medication

Prompting and reminders so tablets are taken at the right time, and further support where this is agreed in the care plan and our carers are trained for it.

Meals and drinks

Preparing breakfast, lunch or a simple evening meal, encouraging regular drinks and quietly keeping an eye on appetite.

Who Personal Care Is For

Personal care suits anyone who is managing at home but finding certain parts of the day difficult. Families usually contact us when they notice things like these.

  • An older parent who has stopped showering because getting in and out of the bath has become frightening
  • Someone recovering from a fall, a stroke, an operation or a hospital stay
  • A person living with arthritis, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis or another long term condition
  • Someone in the earlier stages of dementia who needs prompting rather than doing for
  • An adult with a physical disability who wants support on their own terms
  • A family carer who is doing everything themselves and cannot keep it up

Not sure what level of care is needed? That is exactly what the free assessment is for. Call us on 0116 403 0152.

How Care Is Arranged

  1. 1

    Tell us what is happening

One phone call or a short form. Explain the situation in your own words. There is no cost and no obligation.

  2. 2

    Free care assessment

We visit at home, or talk on the phone first if that is easier, and work out what support is actually needed.

  3. 3

    Your personal care plan

We write a plan around routines, preferences, risks and the things that matter to your relative, agreed with you.

  4. 4

    Meet your carer

We match a carer to the person, not just to the rota, and introduce them before regular care begins.

  5. 5

    Ongoing review and contact

Regular reviews, an open line to the office and changes made quickly when needs change.

Dignity Is Not an Extra

Every carer we send is expected to work to the same standards. Knock and wait, never walk straight in. Ask before doing, explain what is happening next. Keep doors closed and curtains drawn. Use towels properly so nobody is left exposed and cold. Never rush someone who is having a slow morning.

You can request a female or male carer and we will do our best to match that every visit. We keep the same carers wherever the rota allows, because personal care works far better when it is someone your relative already knows.

Visit Times and Options

Personal care is usually delivered in planned visits through the day.

  • Morning call, typically 30 to 60 minutes, to get up, wash and dress and have breakfast
  • Lunchtime call for a meal, a drink and a check in
  • Teatime call for an evening meal and support with medication where agreed
  • Bedtime call to help settle safely for the night
  • Two carers where a safe transfer or hoist is needed, if this is agreed at assessment

If needs increase, the same team can move to longer visits, overnight support, live in care or 24 hour care without starting again with a new agency.

Why Leicester Families Choose Murray Healthcare

  • Carers who are recruited carefully, checked, trained and supervised before they support anyone
  • Consistent faces wherever the rota allows
  • Female or male carers by request
  • A Leicester office you can actually get through to during working hours
  • Registered with the Care Quality Commission

Common Questions

Wherever the rota allows, yes. Consistency matters more in personal care than anywhere else, so we build rounds around it. When your regular carer is on leave or unwell we will tell you in advance where we can.

Yes. Many families do and it is a normal request. Tell us at the assessment and we will match it at every visit we can.

Most morning calls are 30 to 60 minutes. Shorter calls rarely allow enough time for a proper wash without rushing, so we will be honest about what is realistic.

Our carers prompt and remind as standard. Anything beyond that is agreed at assessment and recorded in the care plan, and only carried out by carers trained for it.

That is very common and it is usually about pride rather than the care itself. We start gently, often with the least personal tasks, and build trust before anything else.

We will agree a time window and stick to it as closely as traffic and earlier calls allow. If a carer is running late, the office will let you know.
