Care That Fits the Person, Not the Age

Nobody wants to be treated as old. What most people want is to carry on with their own routine in their own home, with a bit of help where things have got harder.

That is what elderly care at home is. It might be one visit a week to help with a bath and a shop. It might be four calls a day. It might eventually be a carer living in. The point is that it starts wherever you actually are, and it changes when your circumstances change.

Signs a Parent May Need Some Help

Families usually notice small things first, often on a visit home. None of these on its own means care is needed, but together they are worth a conversation.

  • Unopened post piling up, or bills going unpaid
  • Little food in the house, or the same meal every day
  • Weight loss, or clothes that suddenly look too big
  • Wearing the same clothes for several days
  • A home that is less clean or tidy than it used to be
  • Missed medication, or tablets still in the box at the end of the week
  • Bruises, or a fall that gets mentioned in passing
  • Not going out, or dropping the clubs and friends they used to see
  • Being unsteady on the stairs or getting up from a chair

If you are recognising several of these, call us on 0116 403 0152 and talk it through. There is no cost and no obligation.

How Much Support Do You Need?

1

A weekly visit

A bath, a shop, a bit of company and someone keeping an eye. Often where families begin.

2

Daily calls

Morning and evening visits for personal care, meals and medication, with the day still their own in between.

3

Several calls a day

Up to four visits, covering getting up, meals, medication and settling at night.

4

Round the clock support

Live in care or overnight cover where somebody should not be alone.

Most families start smaller than they expect. We will tell you if we think less is enough. Live in care is there if it is ever needed.

What Our Carers Help With

Personal care

Washing, dressing, help to the toilet and moving safely around the home.

Meals and shopping

Cooking, shopping, and quiet attention to whether someone is eating and drinking properly.

Medication support

Prompting and reminders at the right times, with further support agreed in the care plan.

Around the house

Laundry, changing beds, tidying and keeping the home the way they like it.

Getting out

Appointments, the shops, church, the club and visiting friends.

Company

Conversation, a cup of tea, the crossword. For a lot of people this is the part that matters most.

Staying Independent, Not Taken Over

There is a real difference between doing things for somebody and doing things with them. A good carer does as much as is needed and no more.

If your dad can still make his own breakfast, our carer will not take that off him. If your mum can manage the stairs slowly with a hand nearby, she keeps managing the stairs. Confidence goes quickly at this age, and it is very hard to get back once it has gone.

When You Live Away From Leicester

A lot of the families who call us are ringing from Bristol, London or further. They cannot pop in on the way home from work and they worry constantly.

We keep you in the picture. Notes after visits, a call from the office when something changes, and a straight answer when you ask how she really is. You should not have to piece it together from a fifteen minute phone call on a Sunday.

Common Questions

There is rarely one moment. If you are noticing several of the signs above, or you are worrying between visits, it is worth a conversation. An assessment costs nothing and commits you to nothing.

Many clients start with a single visit a week. There is no requirement to take more than you need.

This is very common. We usually start with something practical and unthreatening, such as help with shopping or a bit of company, and build from there. Most people come round once they meet the carer.

You get notes after visits and a call from the office when something changes. You can ring us during office hours and speak to somebody who knows her.

Yes. Shopping, appointments, prescriptions and getting out to see people are all part of what we do.

Yes. Visits can be added or lengthened, and the plan is reviewed regularly as needs change.
