What Palliative Care at Home Means
Palliative care is care that focuses on comfort rather than cure. It is not only for the final days. Many people receive it for months, alongside treatment, while carrying on with ordinary life at home.
Most people, when asked, say they would rather be at home. Their own bed. Their own things. Family able to come and go. Our part is the practical, everyday support that makes staying at home possible, working alongside the nurses and doctors already involved.
How We Help
Comfort and personal care
Washing, dressing, mouth care, help with positioning and keeping someone comfortable, all at their own pace.
Eating and drinking
Small meals, favourite foods, sips of tea. We follow what the person wants rather than what a chart says.
Being there
Sitting with someone. Reading aloud. Music. Quiet company through a long afternoon or a difficult evening.
Practical help
Laundry, tidying, shopping and answering the door, so the family can spend their time on what matters.
Night support
Overnight or live in cover where the nights have become long, so the family can sleep.
Support for the family
A steady presence, honest conversation and a phone number that gets answered during office hours.
What We Do and What We Do Not Do
We think it is important to be clear about this.
Murray Healthcare provides personal care and practical support at home. Symptom control, pain relief, prescribing and clinical procedures are carried out by the district nursing team, the GP and specialist palliative care services. We work alongside them, not instead of them.
If something changes, our carers know who to contact and when. We tell the family, we tell the nurses, and we do not wait to see how it goes.
Working With the Team Around You
Most families at this stage already have people involved. District nurses, a GP, sometimes a hospice team, a specialist nurse or a hospital consultant.
We fit around them. We keep notes, we pass on what we notice, and we attend or contribute to reviews where we are asked to. Nobody should have to repeat the same information to five different people.

Wishes, Faith and Culture
What matters at the end of life is different for every family, and it is not our place to assume.
- We ask about faith, prayer, diet, washing and who should be present
- We record wishes in the care plan and share them with the carers involved
- We work with any advance care plan or DNACPR decision already in place
- We follow the family's lead on visitors, privacy and quiet
Leicester is a city of many communities, and our carers come from many of them. If a particular language or cultural understanding would help, tell us and we will do our best to match it.

How Care Is Arranged
- Call us and tell us what is happening. There is no cost for the conversation.

- Care starts, with a plan shared with the nurses and the GP.

Common Questions
Palliative care focuses on comfort and quality of life and can continue for months or years. End of life care is the support given in the last weeks or days. The same carers often provide both.
Usually yes. Tell us the situation when you call and we will be honest about what we can put in place and when.
Yes. They lead on symptoms, medication and clinical care. We provide the personal and practical support at home and keep them informed.
Yes, where it is agreed. This may be a waking night, a sleeping night or live in care, and we will explain the difference.
By taking on the practical work, by being straight with you about what we are seeing, and by making sure somebody is there when you need to rest.
That is often possible with the right support in place. It depends on needs and on what the clinical team advises, and we will always be honest with you about it.
