Why Eating Well Gets Harder

Very few people stop eating properly on purpose. It happens gradually. Standing at the cooker gets tiring. Carrying shopping home becomes a job. Cooking for one after forty years of cooking for two feels pointless. Appetite fades after an illness, or medication changes how things taste.

The result is often the same. Toast for tea, the same meal on repeat, a fridge with very little in it, and a family who notice on a visit that their mum has got thinner.

How We Help

Cooking proper meals

Meals prepared in your own kitchen, from your own recipes where you have them, at the times you actually want to eat.

The weekly shop

Shopping with you or for you, including the brands you like rather than whatever was on offer.

Drinks through the day

Regular cups of tea, water within reach, and a quiet eye on whether enough is being drunk.

Support at mealtimes

Company while you eat, help opening packaging and cutting things up, and time to finish without being rushed.

Kitchen and food safety

Checking dates, clearing the fridge, safe storage and reheating, and keeping the kitchen usable.

Routines that work

Meals at consistent times, a shopping day in the diary, and a week that has a shape to it.

Noticing What Others Miss

Somebody who is in the house every week sees things a monthly visit does not.

  • Meals left uneaten, or food going out of date in the fridge
  • Clothes and rings getting looser
  • Drinking very little, or getting confused in the afternoons
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing or a change in how things taste
  • Losing interest in food after a bereavement or an illness

Our carers record what they see and tell the office and the family. Where something needs looking at properly, we say so and suggest a word with the GP. We do not diagnose and we do not give dietary advice, but we do notice, and we do speak up.

Food That Is Actually Yours

Food is personal, and getting it wrong is one of the quickest ways to lose somebody's trust.

At the assessment we ask what you actually eat. Halal, kosher, vegetarian or vegan. The dishes you grew up with. The things you have never liked and never will. Portion sizes that suit you rather than what somebody else thinks you should have.

Leicester is a city with a lot of cooking in it, and our carers come from many of the same communities as the people they support. If it would help to have a carer who knows the food, tell us and we will do our best.

Working With the Professionals Involved

Where a dietitian, a speech and language therapist, a GP or a district nurse has given guidance, we follow it exactly as written.

That includes any advice about food consistency, supplements or fluids. We do not change or interpret clinical guidance, and if something in the plan is not working we go back to the person who set it.

How Care Starts

  1. 1

Tell us what mealtimes look like at the moment.

  2. 2

A free assessment at home, including a look at the kitchen and what is actually in it.

  3. 3

A written plan, clear costs, and a carer introduced before visits begin.
