Taking a Break Is Not Letting Anyone Down
If you have been caring for a parent or a partner, you already know how quietly it takes over. The broken nights, the appointments, the meals, the worry that sits in the background of every other plan. Most family carers keep going long past the point where anyone else would have asked for help.
Respite care is simply somebody else doing it for a while. A week so you can go away. A few days so you can have your own operation. Regular afternoons so you get a break every week rather than once a year. You do not need to be at breaking point to arrange it, and you are not letting anyone down by asking.
Types of Respite We Provide
Planned respite
Booked in advance for a holiday, a family wedding, a work trip or simply a rest. Anything from a few hours a week to a full package for a fortnight.
Emergency respite
When a family carer is taken ill, admitted to hospital or called away suddenly. Call us and we will be honest straight away about what we can arrange and how quickly.
Hospital discharge support
Short term care at home after an admission, while somebody gets back on their feet and while longer term arrangements are decided.
Regular weekly respite
The same afternoon or morning each week, so you have something dependable in the diary rather than a break you keep postponing.
What Respite Care Covers
Respite care is not a reduced service. Whatever you normally do, we do.

Personal care
Help with washing, dressing, using the toilet and moving safely around the home.
Meals and drinks
Cooking the food your relative actually likes, at the times they are used to, and keeping an eye on eating and drinking.
Medication support
Prompting and reminders at the right times, with further support agreed in the care plan.
Company and routine
Keeping the day recognisable. The same programmes, the same walk, the same cup of tea at four o'clock.
Household support
Laundry, tidying and shopping, so you are not coming home to a fortnight of jobs.
Overnight and live in respite
Where somebody cannot be left, we can arrange overnight or live in cover for the period you are away.

Learning the Routine Before You Go
The thing most family carers worry about is not whether we are competent. It is whether we will know that he takes two sugars, that she will not settle without the landing light on, or that the tablets go in the blue dish.
So we ask. Before respite starts we sit down with you and write the small things down, not just the care tasks. Where things are kept, who calls in, which neighbour has a key, what the evenings usually look like. Then it goes in the care plan, so the carer arriving on day one already knows.
How Respite Care Starts
- 1
Call us with the dates, or the situation if it is urgent.
- 2
A free assessment at home, where we go through the routine in detail.
- 3
A written plan and clear costs, then the carer starts on the agreed date.
How Much Notice Do We Need?
For planned respite, the more notice the better, particularly for school holidays, Christmas and the summer, when demand is highest. A few weeks is comfortable.
For emergencies we will always try. Call the office on 0116 403 0152 and we will tell you plainly what we can do rather than promising something we cannot staff. If we cannot help within your timescale, we will say so quickly so you can look elsewhere without losing a day.
