What Complex Care Means

Complex care is the term used when someone needs more than a standard visiting service. It usually means longer visits or several carers, a care plan that has to account for real risk, and close coordination with the health professionals already involved.

It is often needed after a serious illness, a stroke, a spinal or brain injury, or as a long term condition progresses. It can also be the right answer for someone stuck in hospital longer than anyone intended, where a well organised package at home is the better outcome.

We are honest about scope. Murray Healthcare is a homecare service, not a nursing agency. There are tasks we carry out and tasks we do not, and we will tell you which is which at the assessment rather than after care has started.

How Murray Healthcare Supports Complex Needs

A plan built on real assessment

Longer, more detailed assessment covering routines, risks, equipment, moving and handling, communication and what a good day looks like.

Carers matched and prepared

Carers are introduced to the package before it starts, briefed properly and given time to learn the routine.

Longer visits and double ups

Extended calls, and two carers together where a transfer or a task cannot be carried out safely by one person.

Working with the professionals involved

We keep in step with district nurses, GPs, therapists, discharge teams and case managers, and we contact them when something changes.

Clear records and reporting

Notes at every visit, a defined route for raising concerns, and a named contact at the office who knows the package.

Planned cover, not last minute scrambling

A small trained team around each complex package, so cover for sickness and leave comes from people who already know the person.

Who Complex Care Is For

Complex care is usually right where needs are high, stable support matters and a standard rota would not be safe.

  • Someone leaving hospital after a long admission who needs a properly planned package at home
  • An adult living with a neurological condition such as multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease or Parkinson's disease
  • A person with limited mobility who needs equipment and two carers for safe transfers

Not sure whether the support you are describing counts as complex care? Call us on 0116 403 0152 and we will tell you plainly.

How a Complex Package Is Set Up

  1. 1

    Initial conversation

Tell us the situation and who else is involved. For a hospital discharge, tell us the ward and the timescale.

  2. 2

    Detailed assessment

A longer assessment at home or on the ward, covering tasks, risks, equipment, environment and the outcomes that matter.

  3. 3

    Agreeing scope

We confirm in writing what we will deliver, what we will not, and where another service is needed alongside us.

  4. 4

    Team selection and preparation

A named team is assigned, briefed and where relevant given task specific training and competency sign off before care begins.

  5. 5

    Care starts with close review

Early reviews in the first fortnight, then a regular cycle, with changes made as soon as they are needed.

Training, Competence and Governance

Every carer completes induction and mandatory training before working unsupervised. Where a package requires task specific skills, carers are trained for that task, assessed as competent and signed off before they carry it out. Nobody is asked to do something they have not been prepared for.

Supervisions, spot checks and care plan reviews sit behind every package, and our registered manager holds accountability for what we agree to deliver. If a request falls outside our scope, competence or insurance, we say so and help you find the right service rather than taking the work and hoping.

Funding Complex Care

Complex packages are funded in several ways. Some families fund care privately. Others receive a personal budget or a direct payment through Leicester City Council. Where needs are primarily health related, NHS Continuing Healthcare funding may apply, and this is assessed by the NHS rather than by us.

We cannot decide eligibility. What we can do is explain how our costs are structured, provide clear written pricing after assessment and work with a case manager or broker where one is appointed.

Why Leicester Families and Case Managers Choose Murray Healthcare

  • Honest scoping, so nobody discovers a gap after care has started
  • A small consistent team around each package rather than a rotating rota
  • Direct access to the registered manager during working hours
  • Registered with the Care Quality Commission

Common Questions

Usually higher needs, real risk, longer visits or two carers, and the need to coordinate with health professionals. If you are unsure, describe the situation and we will tell you.

Yes. Complex packages work best when everyone is in step, so we share updates, flag changes and attend reviews where we are asked to.

It can. Eligibility is decided by the NHS or the local authority, not by us, but we work with case managers and brokers and can provide clear written costs for a funding application.

Task specific training is arranged for the package, with competency assessment and sign off before a carer works alone.

Cover comes from the small team already trained on the package wherever possible, so the person is not left with someone unfamiliar.

Yes, where it is agreed at assessment. This may be waking nights, sleeping nights or live in care, and we will explain the difference before anything is agreed.
