What 24 Hour Care Actually Means
The phrase 24 hour care is used loosely across this industry and it causes real confusion. Families often agree to something they have not fully understood, then find the nights are not covered the way they expected.
There are four different arrangements behind that one phrase. They cost different amounts, they suit different needs, and only one of them means somebody is awake all night.
| Arrangement | What it means | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Live in care | One carer lives in the home and supports the person through the day, with a break each day and an uninterrupted night in most cases. | Someone who needs company, prompting and help through the day, and reassurance rather than frequent help at night. |
| Sleeping nights | A carer sleeps in the home and gets up if they are needed during the night. | Occasional night needs, or a family who want someone in the house for peace of mind. |
| Waking nights | A carer stays awake through the whole night, ready to help at any point. | Someone who needs support several times a night, or who is unsettled after dark. |
| Two carer rota | Carers work in shifts so that somebody is awake and on duty at every hour of the day and night. | High needs day and night, or where one carer alone could not manage safely. |

Which One Do You Actually Need?
The honest way to work this out is to count the nights. Ask yourself how often somebody currently gets up in the night, and what happens when they do.
- If nobody is getting up, live in care is usually enough
- If somebody gets up occasionally, sleeping nights normally covers it
- If somebody is up two or three times a night, you need waking nights
- If needs are high through the day as well as the night, a two carer rota is the safer arrangement
We will go through this with you at the assessment rather than selling you the largest package. If a smaller arrangement would do the job, we will say so.
What a Round the Clock Package Includes

Personal care through the day
Help with washing, dressing, using the toilet and moving safely around the home, at whatever times suit the person.
Meals, drinks and medication
Cooked meals, regular drinks and prompting with tablets at the right times, with further support agreed in the care plan.
Company and routine
Someone there through the day. Conversation, familiar routines, a walk out, a programme watched together.
Night time support
Help to the toilet, resettling, repositioning where agreed, and simply being there when the house feels frightening at 3am.
Household support
Laundry, tidying, shopping and keeping the home comfortable, so family visits can be visits again.
Communication with family
Notes each day, a call when something changes and a named contact at the Leicester office.

What the Home Needs to Provide
For live in care and sleeping nights, the carer needs somewhere to sleep and rest.
- A private bedroom with a proper bed and somewhere to store belongings
- Wifi and space to prepare and eat food
- An agreed arrangement for the carer's daily break, usually around two hours
For waking nights and rota care the carer stays awake, so a bedroom is not required, though somewhere to sit and a working kettle make a long night far more bearable.

Read Family ReviewsCommon Questions
Live in care is one carer living in the home with a daily break and a normal night. True 24 hour cover, with someone awake at all times, needs waking nights or a two carer rota.
It depends on the arrangement. On live in care and sleeping nights, yes. On waking nights and rota care, no, the carer is awake and on duty.
Live in carers take an agreed break each day and periods of leave. We arrange cover from the team already familiar with the person, and we agree this before care begins.
Sometimes, particularly for a couple, since one carer can support two people. Waking nights and rota care cost more than live in care. We give clear written costs after the assessment.
It depends on matching and availability. Call us with your timescale and we will tell you honestly what is possible rather than promising a date we cannot meet.
Yes. Many families start with live in care and add waking nights as needs increase. The care plan is reviewed regularly.
