What Is Dementia Care at Home?
Dementia care at home means support built around the person rather than the diagnosis. It might start as a prompt to eat lunch or a reminder about tablets, and grow over the years into help with washing, dressing and getting through the day calmly.
The reason so many families choose to keep care at home is simple. Familiarity does a lot of the work. The same kitchen, the same chair, the same view from the window and the same faces coming through the door all reduce confusion. A move to an unfamiliar building can undo months of settled routine in a fortnight. Staying put is not always the right answer, but it is usually worth trying first.
How Murray Healthcare Helps
Keeping routines steady
We follow the rhythm that already works. Same carer where the rota allows, same order to the morning, same cup, same chair. Predictability is calming.
Gentle communication
Short sentences, one question at a time, plenty of time to answer. We do not argue with what someone believes to be true or correct them repeatedly.
Support with personal care
Discreet help with washing, dressing and using the toilet, offered in a way that protects pride and never rushes.
Meals, drinks and medication
Preparing food that is actually eaten, encouraging regular drinks and prompting tablets at the right time, with further support agreed in the care plan.
Meaningful activity
Music, photographs, folding washing, a walk to the shop, a hand of cards. Purpose matters more than entertainment.
Keeping families informed
Notes after each visit, a call when something changes and honest conversations about what is coming next.
Support at Every Stage
Dementia is not one thing and it does not move at one speed. Care should change as needs change, not all at once.

Early stage
Prompting, company, help with appointments, shopping and paperwork, and keeping confidence up while independence is still strong.
Middle stage
Regular daily visits for personal care, meals and medication, more structure to the day, and support with disorientation and repeated questions.
Later stage
Longer visits, help with mobility and continence, two carers where needed, and often a move to live in or 24 hour support at home.

How Care Starts
- 1
Tell us what is happening. One phone call or a short form, with no cost and no obligation.
- 2
A free assessment at home, where we look at routines, risks and what matters to the person.
- 3
Care begins with a written plan, a matched carer and regular reviews as things change.

When the Day Gets Difficult
Late afternoon and early evening are often the hardest hours. Restlessness, repeated questions, wanting to go home while already at home, or refusing help that was accepted yesterday. None of this is anyone being difficult.
Our carers are asked to look for the reason rather than the behaviour. Pain, hunger, tiredness, needing the toilet, too much noise or too little light explain far more than the dementia itself. We change the approach, not the person. If something works, it goes in the care plan so the next carer does the same thing.
Safety at Home
Small changes at home often make more difference than more hours of care. At the assessment we look at practical things and share what we notice.
- Kitchen and cooker safety, and whether appliances need adapting
- Trip risks, lighting, stairs and bathroom grab rails
- Whether the front door and keys need a safer arrangement
- Prompts that help, such as a clock showing the day and simple labels
- Signs of weight loss, dehydration or unreported falls
- Where a referral to a GP, occupational therapist or the local memory service may help
Care Options for Dementia
- Visiting calls from 30 minutes through to several hours a day
- Waking or sleeping night support where nights have become unsettled
- Live in care, so one familiar carer is there through the whole day
- Respite care so a family carer can rest, with a proper handover first
As needs increase, the same office and often the same carers continue. Nobody has to start again with a new agency at the hardest moment. Read more about live in care and respite care.

What Families Say

After the assessment, care can usually begin within a few days. If there has been a crisis, a hospital discharge or a carer breakdown, call us and we will tell you honestly what we can do and when.
All our carers complete dementia awareness training as part of induction, with further training and supervision as they progress.
That is common and it is why we protect consistency so carefully. Carers introduce themselves the same way each visit, explain what they are doing and never test someone's memory.
Yes. Visits can be lengthened, added or changed to overnight, live in or 24 hour support, and the care plan is reviewed regularly.
We start small and unthreatening, often with company, a cup of tea or a task he still enjoys, and build from there. Trust first, personal care later.
Yes, where it is agreed at assessment. This may be a waking night, a sleeping night or live in care, and we will explain the difference plainly.
