Support That Starts With Communication

Most home care is designed around tasks. This is designed around how you take in information and how you prefer to be communicated with. Get that right and everything else works. Get it wrong and even a simple visit becomes exhausting.

At the assessment we agree how our carers will communicate with you, and it goes into the care plan so every carer does the same thing. Nobody should have to explain it again at the door each week.

If You Are Living With Sight Loss

Announcing arrival and departure

Carers say who they are as they come in and tell you when they are leaving, so you are never left talking to an empty room.

Describing surroundings

Saying what has been put where, describing the plate in front of you, and mentioning anything moved or new.

Keeping things where they belong

Everything goes back exactly where it was. A moved chair or a shifted kettle is a genuine hazard, not a small thing.

Guiding when you want it

Sighted guide technique where you want it and not where you do not. You lead, we follow.

Post, forms and bills

Reading correspondence aloud, filling in forms and helping with phone calls, all kept confidential.

Getting out and about

Shopping, appointments, groups and visiting people, at your pace and by your route.

If You Are Living With Hearing Loss

  • Facing you, in good light, so lip reading is possible
  • Speaking clearly at a normal pace, without shouting or exaggerating
  • Writing things down, or using a phone screen, whenever it is easier
  • Checking hearing aids are in, working and clean, where that is part of the plan
  • Not talking while walking away, from another room or with their back turned
  • Confirming what has been agreed rather than assuming it was heard

If communication is by British Sign Language, tell us at the assessment. We will be honest about what we can offer and help you find specialist support if we are not the right fit.

Deafblind Support

Where both sight and hearing are affected, communication needs to be agreed carefully and followed exactly. We work to whatever method you already use, whether that is clear speech close to the better ear, block letters on the palm, deafblind manual or an agreed set of touch signals.

We keep carers consistent, because a familiar person who already knows your method is worth far more than a bigger team.

Everything Else We Help With

Sensory support is rarely the only thing needed, so it sits alongside the rest of what we do.

  • Personal care, washing and dressing
  • Meals, drinks and shopping
  • Medication prompting, with further support agreed in the care plan
  • Laundry, cleaning and keeping the home in order
  • Company, conversation and getting out

Working With Sensory Services

Leicester has good sensory support locally, and we work alongside it. Sensory teams, rehabilitation officers, audiology, low vision clinics and local sight and hearing charities.

We follow any guidance already in place, and with your agreement we pass on what we notice, such as a hearing aid that keeps whistling or a change in what you can see.

How Support Starts

  1. 1

Contact us however suits you. Phone, email or text, whichever is easiest.

  2. 2

A free assessment at home, where communication is agreed first and tasks second.

  3. 3

A written plan and clear costs, then carers introduced before support begins.
