What Live in Care Is
Live in care means one carer moves into the home and supports the person through the day. They are there in the morning, there at lunchtime, there when the post arrives and there in the evening. They sleep in the house at night and, in most arrangements, get an uninterrupted night.
It is the closest thing to a care home in terms of cover, without the move. The bed stays the same. The kitchen stays the same. The neighbours, the routine, the pets and the front door all stay the same. For a lot of families, that is the whole point.
Live in care is not the same as 24 hour waking cover. If somebody needs help two or three times a night, waking nights or a rota arrangement is the safer answer. We explain the difference on our 24 hour care page and at the assessment.
A Typical Day With a Live in Carer
No two households run the same way, and the plan follows the person rather than a timetable. A day often looks something like this.

Morning
Help to get up, wash and dress, breakfast made the way it has always been made, tablets prompted, curtains open and the day started gently.
Late morning
Household jobs, laundry on, a bit of shopping, a walk to the shop or the surgery, or simply company while the crossword gets done.
Afternoon
The carer takes an agreed break, usually around two hours, while the person rests or has visitors. Then a cup of tea, a programme, a phone call to family.
Evening
An evening meal cooked at home, help to get ready for bed, doors checked, and someone in the house all night.
What Live in Care Includes
Personal care
Help with washing, dressing, using the toilet and moving safely around the home, given at the person's own pace.
Meals and drinks
Proper home cooked food, shopping, and quiet attention to whether someone is actually eating and drinking enough.
Medication support
Prompting and reminders at the right times, with further support agreed in the care plan.
Getting out and about
Appointments, the shops, church, the club, visiting friends and keeping life going outside the front door.
Company
Somebody to talk to at breakfast. For many families this turns out to matter as much as the care itself.
Matching the Right Carer
A live in carer shares a home, so matching matters more here than anywhere else. At the assessment we talk about far more than care needs.
- Personality, temperament and how much conversation suits the household
- Language, cultural background and food preferences
- Pets, smoking, and whether the household is quiet or busy
- Interests, routines and how the person likes their day to run
You meet the carer before care begins. If the match is not right, tell us and we will change it. Nobody should feel awkward in their own home.
What the Home Needs to Provide
- A private bedroom with a proper bed and somewhere to store belongings
- Wifi and space to prepare and eat food
- Agreement on the carer's daily break, usually around two hours
Cover is arranged for the carer's break, days off and annual leave, from the small team already familiar with the person. We agree this in writing before care starts, so nobody is surprised later.

Live in Care for Couples
One live in carer can often support two people in the same home, which makes live in care considerably better value than two places in a residential home. It also means a couple who have lived together for fifty years do not get separated at the end.
Live in Care or a Care Home?
Both can be the right answer. It depends on the person, the house and the family.
- One to one attention all day, rather than shared staff
- Familiar surroundings, routines, neighbours and pets
- Visitors whenever you like, with no visiting hours
- Often better value for a couple than two care home places
A care home may still be the better choice where the property is unsuitable, where nursing care is needed, or where daily contact with other residents would genuinely help. We will say so if we think that.

Breaks are agreed daily and cover for leave comes from the team already familiar with the person. This is arranged in advance, never at the last minute.
